Heavy vehicle maintenance
In today’s highly competitive markets where margins are constantly under pressure, no mining operation can afford to overlook production inefficiency, downtime or under-utilised human resources.
Maintenance fitters are often required to work in challenging conditions that include humidity, heat and dust. They have to negotiate their way around cables, wiring, connectors and inspection panels that are sometimes held with nuts and catches that may be difficult to move due to a coating of oils or fluids, corrosion or just being too tight because of a wrench applied by an overzealous technician.
They are called on to diagnose, overhaul, repair, tune, maintain and test diesel, petrol or gas-powered vehicles. Fitters have to work on a huge range of vehicles which include articulated dump trucks, rigid off-road trucks, integrated tool carriers and watercarts, wheel loaders, motor graders, scrapers and track-loaders, drilling vehicles, camp-to-site buses, specialised material handling equipment and large fleets of four wheel drive vehicles.
