Patient Positioning

How Important Is Safe Patient Positioning?

AORN estimates that 66% of hospital acquired pressure injuries originate in the OR. (1) Proper patient positioning is a critical factor for prevention and a daily responsibility of perioperative nurses. (2) Every surgical intervention requires a pre-operative assessment, team planning and collaboration to determine appropriate positioning support. Knowledge of the equipment and materials available to protect and maintain proper positioning are critical to safe and successful outcomes.

AORN provides a video and guidelines for safely positioning the patient to ensure optimal outcomes during surgical procedures.
