Chlorination is a common manufacturing process used to make disposable gloves (particularly latex and nitrile) easier to put on and take off without the use of powder.
During this process, the gloves are exposed to chlorine gas or a liquid chlorine solution. This chemical reaction alters the surface of the polymer, slightly hardening it and reducing its natural tackiness (stickiness). The result is a much smoother, slicker finish that glides easily over the skin.
Single chlorination means the glove has been treated with chlorine on only one side – specifically, the inside of the glove that touches your hand.
Treating only the inside ensures the interior is smooth for easy donning and doffing, even if your hands are slightly damp. Meanwhile, the outside of the glove remains untreated, retaining the rubber’s natural tackiness. This provides the user with an excellent, secure grip, which is highly beneficial when handling wet objects, smooth tools, or delicate glass instruments.
Double chlorination means the glove has been treated with chlorine on both the inside and the outside.
Treating both surfaces creates a glove that is completely smooth inside and out. The primary benefit of this is for “double-gloving” (wearing two pairs of gloves at once for extra barrier protection). The slick exterior of the first glove allows the second glove to slide right over it without catching, stretching, or tearing. However, because the outside is hardened, double-chlorinated gloves generally offer less surface grip than single-chlorinated options.
Aside from altering the texture, chlorination changes a few other physical properties of the glove.
Your choice depends entirely on your daily tasks.
If you work in a laboratory, automotive shop, or food processing facility where a strong, tactile grip on tools or wet items is critical, single chlorinated gloves are the better option. If you work in surgery, pharmaceutical compounding, or a high-risk cleanroom where double-gloving is a strict safety protocol, double chlorinated gloves are necessary to ensure your PPE can be layered safely and easily.
