Ansell’s Sri Lanka plant has been awarded the ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System certification, adding to its existing ISO 14001:2015 and Zero Waste to Landfill certifications. This achievement is in line with our global sustainability benchmarks and yet another milestone in our long-term decarbonization journey to Net Zero operations by 2040. This latest certification also means both our Sri Lankan plants are now ISO 50001-certified, Ansell Textile Lanka (ATL) having achieved certification in 2023.
The ISO 50001 Energy Management System isn’t just about reducing energy consumption—it represents a broader commitment to operational excellence, risk reduction, and meeting both customer and regulatory expectations for smarter, leaner and more resilient manufacturing systems. While using renewable energy is vital, this standard goes further by focusing on reducing total energy consumption through optimizing processes, upgrading equipment and minimizing waste. As well as lowering our Lanka plant’s carbon footprint, other benefits of ISO 50001 compliance can include lower running costs and improved system reliability.
Part of our accreditation to ISO 50001 includes committing to a Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, meaning the plant’s energy management isn’t a one-time initiative but based on continuous improvements, such as transitioning to renewable energy. The plant currently sources 83% of its energy from sustainable woodchip biomass and is reducing electricity consumption through targeted initiatives, while also implementing a defined Energy Management Policy to guide efficient energy use. Meanwhile, sub-meters are being installed to monitor energy consumption across the plant.
