What are Ansell’s goals and strategies for transitioning to renewable energy sources?

SUMMARY

What are our goals when it comes to renewable energy?

Transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energies is part of our decarbonization strategy to achieve Net Zero Scope 1 & 2 within our operations by 2040. Our decarbonisation strategy sees us investing in renewable energy initiatives, exploring alternative fuel sources in addition to existing pipeline projects and joining collaborative efforts to align with market and technology innovations.

We are focused on the long-term decarbonization efforts of our internal operations and the milestone of reducing output to 10% residual emissions. For those limited residual emissions, we will explore credible and quality alternatives.

How is it consistent with our values?

At Ansell, we protect people and the planet. Our Net Zero ambition for Scope 1 & 2 is aligned with three of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely the 7th SDG "Affordable and Clean Energy", the 12th SDG “Responsible Consumption and Production” and the 13th SDG "Climate Action".

What are we currently doing in terms of renewable energy?

  • Achieved 45% renewables in our energy mix as of present writing
  • Achieved 100% renewable grid electricity in Portugal and Lithuania, contributing to 11% growth in renewable electricity at our plants from FY20
  • Established an agreement through the Malaysia Green Electricity Tariff program to source at least 90% of our electricity at our plants in Malaysia from renewable and thus, in Melaka, more than 90% of the current site electricity utilization comes from renewable energy sources
  • Investing in Solar Photovoltaic (PVs) at our plants, including over 1.6MW of generation capacity already installed at our sites in China, Malaysia and Thailand
  • Having five high-pressure hot water generators (HWGS) using biomass in Sri Lanka and Thailand
  • Joined the Renewable Thermal Collaborative* in July 2022
  • Joined Climate Group’s EP100* and RE100* in 2022 to align our commitments with the missions of these initiatives

What about the future?

Ansell will roll out investments and programs as part of our Net Zero ambition, including fully commissioning current pipeline projects, sourcing 100% renewable electricity across our operations by 2040 and implementing energy management systems (ISO50001) in all our plants in the next five years.

*Renewable Thermal Collaborative: One the largest coalitions for executing solutions, including knowledge sharing and advocating policy, to decarbonize thermal energy generation.

*RE100: Led by the Climate Group, in partnership with CDP, its mission is to accelerate change towards zero carbon electricity grids globally by 2040. Ansell commits to sourcing 100% renewable electricity across our entire operations by 2040, with an interim target of 60% by 2030.

*EP100: Led by the Climate Group, it aims to accelerate energy efficiency through energy smart businesses. Ansell will implement Energy Management Systems (ISO50001) at all plants over the next 5 years, which includes driving plant-wide awareness and senior management accountability on efficient practices for carbon reduction.
