Research conducted over the past several decades demonstrates that surgical smoke can transmit disease. It is well documented that surgical smoke contains potentially harmful, mutagenic biological materials, gases, and particulates. Members of the surgical team continue to be exposed to the hazards of surgical smoke, especially as the use of various energy modalities to support today’s surgical techniques continues to increase. It's important to know that wearing appropriate respiratory protection devices is a key component in minimizing the spread of potentially infectious diseases, especially in the face of today’s drug resistant organisms, newly recognized pathogens, and knowledge of the health risks associated with surgical smoke.
